People often ask me how to start and more importantly stick to a health and fitness regime and my answer is simple, it boils down to two simple things… for me everything you do has to be Fast and it has to be Fun! So why are these two aspects so important to your success? Well, let’s look at some classic excuses we are all guilty of spouting, ‘I just don’t have the time in my busy life’ and ‘I just don’t enjoy going to the gym’, sound familiar? I thought so!
I completely agree – if something isn’t fun, the chances are we aren’t going to find time for it in our busy schedules.
So how do I make fitness fast and fun? Here are my top tips:
1. Never settle for run of the mill – my fitness background is widely varied and I use this in everything I do. I love to combine a range of movements and activities from trampolining and gymnastics to football and athletics. By keeping it varied, fun and fresh, you will maintain that level of interest.
2. Keep it quick – nobody wants to spend hours in the gym, and if you are, chances are you’re doing something wrong. Keep your workouts fast and under half an hour to keep that intensity high and the results will follow.
3. Get your priorities straight – it is amazing what we will find time for if we enjoy it. Just think how much time you spend online, or watching your favourite series on Netflix, sometimes even just procrastinating – we are all guilty of it! Assess what you spend your time doing and ask yourself ‘is this helping me better myself?’, if the answer is no, then ditch it and do something positive instead. By introducing fun and fast workouts you will find the time to fit it into your life.
4. Keep it real – have a think about why you want to improve your heath and fitness, beyond the stock answer we tell ourselves that we want to look good on the beach. Be honest with yourself and drill down to identify your goals and motivators in order to keep that focus level high. It might be that by looking good you will feel more confident, or by exercising you will be able to keep up with your kids, or be able to explore more on your next dream holiday. Whatever your reason, it will be personal to you and be that much sweeter when you achieve it.
